Oil Paint Practice

Disaster!.. Ok not disaster but just a bad session. I toyed with not posting this as I am not happy with it at all and didn’t even enjoy the process of doing it. This is meant to be a history of my paintings though so it doesn’t make scene to leave it out. Its not the first and I am sure it will not be the last session to frustrate me. Oils on canvas from Life. I struggled from the outset. Trying to use more medium earlier on as I did before but no matter what I did I just couldn’t seem to render the image as I was seeing it. For some reason I just didn’t have the same success mixing the colours and tones as I have done previously. Maybe time to try another monochromatic painting again.

Oil Paint Practice

A great life drawing lesson from two weeks ago. Life model on canvas with oils. Although as always there is allot I didn’t get right I was very pleased with this effort. In particular the colours and tones which just came together without much effort.

I was also using medium to thicken the paint from an early stage so, although the image doesn’t really show it. The final painting has some really nice texture variations.

Illustration – satire

It is of  our hated and despised (by me at least) David Cameron as described by Charlie Brooker may moons ago when he and his party of corporate scumbags got into power. Charlie Brooker described David Cameron as looking like a freshly wanked penis. An equally accurate description then as it is now.

david cameron as described by charlie brookerI Drew the images after a visit to the Cartoon Museum in London where I saw some old Ralph Steadman political satire images. Inspired I went home and, not knowing a hole lot about politics ended up drawing this. Horrible I know but I kind of like it 😉

Oil Paint Practice

The first Painting after the first life drawing class of the year. A familiar model on canvas with Oils. Im pretty happy with how it came out. After a 4 week break from painting. A slow start it all came together nicely at the end of the two hours.

Project – New Cross Stitch – Jon Newey

I have been needle_01-1RENDER_COLOUR_05working with a close friend and creator Jon Newey on another installation. Well actually this has worked out to be more of a strait up sculpture. Working with One Housing group and Goldsmiths University. Jon planed and conceived of a sculpture for a competition. commemorating the livery of haberdashers an industry of great importance to the new cross area. Jon brought me in to help visualize the concepts.I was really struggling to illustrate the space effectively as I had on the previous Letters project. It was because of this i decided to do it in 3D. Initially i was going to use the renders to then create the illustrations i had first planned to do. In the end because of time constraints we just went with the renders.. Using some site plans I was able to create a reasonably effective if slightly inaccurate depiction.

Needle Mid 11

Later we  built a model version of the space to help fabricators. this was made of lots of cardboard odds and ends. some wire and some miliput.

3d CombinedFinally Jon had me make a scale model of needle again to help the fabricators. As well as renders we where able to provide a CAD model of the final design.

Thanks to Jon’s hard work this project actually looks like it is going to go ahead.

Oil Paint Practice

A good session this week. Oil paint on canvas from a life model.

A really push this week to pull out the light areas and push back the dark. Overall I’m really happy with the result, even though the face came out allot more masculine than intended.

Oil Paint Practive

So refreshing not to have a face as the main focus. Oil on canvas with a life model She chose the pose and I was very happy as A. No face (well not really) and B. I don’t think Ive ever painted a back/behind before. I am very happy with how it came out. It didn’t really look that great until I rendered the couch and pillows around her.

Oil Painting Practice

So Its been a couple of months since my last life drawing session. As is often the case with these things it felt like I had forgotten everything while working on this one. Oil paint on canvas with a live model. The addition of a cloth scarf was nice although I struggled to render it in a way to make the hair beneath stand out.

Oil Painting – Gorrilla

I fancied a change from people and since my girlfriend likes Gorillas I decided to paint one.

Oil on canvas. This took about 6 hours total to finish. All in all I’m pretty happy and Claudia like it so I’m going to call this one a success. Quite allot harder to paint than people because of the minute detail. I tried to get a bit painterly with this to create fur effect without spending hours trying to make it textured. After many attempts at the yes I’m very happy with the ones I finished with. Capturing an animals soul is possibly harder than a humans.

Ultimate Warrior – Progression Giff

I realized I had a set of images through the progression of the ultimate warrior painting.

They are roughly 1 every hour but its not accurate. I essentially just took a snap before going on a break.

I thought it might be fun to make an animated gif that cycles through them so here it is.

Its quite good/interesting to see for me the artist or for anyone else who is vaguely interested so I might try to do more of them for future paintings. I might even time them accurately or video the whole session. who knows.
